Following ‘Essences baroques’ (Ad Vitam records 2016), ‘Cordes basques’ is Arkaïtz Chambonnet’s secondsolorecording. On this album, the guitarist skilfully explores a rare musical realm characterised by a profoundly Basque identity, drawing on compositions from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Trained by Emmanuel de Hulster and Gérard Abiton, Arkaïtz Chambonnet graduated from the Paris Conservatoire (CNSM) in Olivier Chassain’s class. He is equally at home as a soloist and a chamber musician. Between 2009 and 2011, he won six prizes, including First Prize and the Special Prize for Interpretation at the Fernando Sor Competition in Rome, Second Prize at the Printemps de la Guitare in Belgium, and Second Prize and the Special Prize for Interpretation at the Francisco Tárrega Competition in Spain, the latter being one of the most prestigious competitions in the world.
A regular performer with orchestras, he collaborates in Spain with the Orquestra de Castelló and the Orquestra de la Marina Alta. He is also one of the soloists with the Paul Kuentz Orchestra, with whom he has performed extensively since 2024.
In 2012, he co-founded the Quatuor Eclisses, an internationally renowned guitar quartet, which has released four albums on the Ad Vitam Records label. He has also collaborated with musicians such as Thibaut Garcia, Emmanuel Rossfelder, Yaïr Benaïm and Régis Pasquier.
Arkaïtz Chambonnet describes the revelation that struck him as follows: “In early 2023, I stumbled upon a piece for guitar – Portu errota – by a Basque composer I’d never heard of, Antón Larrauri. As I myself have Basque roots, I began searching for other composers as well as works connected to the Basque Country. I then discovered a whole repertoire of guitar music I hadn’t realised existed, some of which had been very little performed, or even never recorded. That is how the story of this album began …”
