Furniture Design and Construction

Furniture designers develop and prepare furniture for manufacture. They are particularly concerned with aspects of furniture that relate to human usage and behavior, product appeal, and fashion. Furniture design can be considered a specialist area of industrial design (product design). Furniture designing and construction is a subsidiary course to interior designing; therefore, furniture decoration, conservation, research, and innovation are alternate career options that can be pursued after completing this course if students are not keen on designing and developing high-end products.

This book builds upon fundamental knowledge of solid timber design and construction to exploit a range of traditional and contemporary techniques for designing, planning, and fabricating a variety of basic typographic volumes central to furnishings and housewares, such as the cup and the box. Topics covered include the selection of an appropriate technology—from hand tools to woodworking machines to digital fabrication—in relation to the design, plan, and product goals.
