Having used her own modern travails to reorder both her personal priorities and music, Olivia Newton-John seems to have largely cast off the breathy sex-kitten image that haunted her career. But this live album (recorded at Atlantic City's Taj Mahal showroom in 1999) shows she's lost none of her commercial and artistic acumen in the bargain. Neatly interweaving songs from Gaia (the '94 album that chronicles her quasi-spiritual rebirth) and her Nashville outing, Back with a Heart, with a generous slate of hits, the singer deftly casts it all in an aura of uplifting hope with her brief comments between songs. As on-stage shtick, it's oddly not so different from the Rev. Al Green's latter-day tack--and often as effective. Songs like "Xanadu" and "Magic" slide surprisingly well into the mold, even if the numbers from Grease and Let's Get Physical remain obvious crowd pleasers. Newton-John's voice seems much stronger throughout than in her media icon years, backed by an eight-piece band that delivers it all flawlessly.
