The Briarcliff Orchestra - The Briarcliff Orchestra Plays... (1969)

This is an album that needs no notes in explanation of its contents. All you need to know to make you know it is great are two things—the things you probably already know at a glance. One—it is played by the glorious Briarcliff Orchestra; two —the selections are among those now-songs that are destined to become classics in the popular field. As a matter of fact, many of them are almost standards already, even though they are of quite recent vintage.

Speaking of now-songs, it is interesting to note that two of the recordings are from the Broadway smash “Hair.” It has been running over a year now and it looks like it might run forever. Considered to be the most exciting and modern musical on ‘Broddway, the show has a score that is making hits right and left. Here we have Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In and the title song, Hair—both of which have been high on the bestseller charts. All the rest are also echoes of what's happening today: The Windmills of Your Mind, this year's Academy-Award winner; Do You Know the Way to San Jose, which won a Grammy Award, and the current hit In the Ghetto, among others.
