Bob van Asperen - Soler: Complete Works for Harpsichord (12 CDs, 1992)

Soler was a friend and student of the great Scarlatti, and many of his sonatas show the influence of that great master. They are short, single movement compositions in two parts, both repeated. On the other hand, there are also sonatas that come closer to the modern style being cultivated by the emerging classical composers--Haydn, Mozart, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. These are more extended works in several movements. Standing alone is the ever-popular Fandango, which has become a repertory staple in its transcription for solo guitar. These performances are the only complete ones available of this substantial and exciting body of work, and they are superb in every way. --David Hurwitz
