The three chapters that make up this volume come from the worlds of electron microscopy and image processing and in particular, image processing in three dimensions.
The scanning electron microscope has frequently appeared in the pages of these Advances — indeed the earliest full account of the instrument was published here just a year after the first commercial model was put on the market. The performance of the scanning electron microscope continues to improve and its range of applications to widen, as shown by M.M. El-Gomati and C.G.H. Walker in their account of progress towards quantitative scanning electron microscopy.
Logarithmic image processing (LIP), the subject of the second chapter, has also appeared in the past in these Advances. In this new contribution, L. Navarro, G. Courtcbaisse and M. Jourlin introduce us to logarithmic wavelets.
The final chapter is also concerned with wavelets and their siblings, ridgelets and beamlets. The originality of this chapter by F. Lanusse, J.-L. Starck, A. Woiscllc and M.J. Fadili is that these arc here extended to three dimensions. The challenge is formidable but, as the authors show, much progress has already been made and promising ways of solving the problems that arise arc known.
