Noting that the post-pandemic world offers a blank slate that can be taken advantage of by education, the authors describe how education can change after the COVID-19 pandemic. They describe what the future might look like in terms of the issues of work and economy and developments in technology, including universal basic income, transhumanism, self-aware artificial intelligence, and virtual reality worlds; the history of education from ancient Greece to the Enlightenment and how education expanded to the universal system currently in the UK; rethinking the goals of education, including how societal success is currently measured, alternative societal outcomes and what they might mean for a post-pandemic education system, and the features of this system, including caring for the environment, tackling post-truth, the need for wise decision making, achieving well-being, encouraging collaboration and tolerance, and the importance of creativity; and what the future of education might look like.
