Lewis talked and wrote a lot about miracles during the early 1940s. In fact, he started his book on miracles in 1943. People had told him that the miracles in the Gospels were hindrances to their belief. For him, Christianity was precisely the story of a great miracle and was nothing without the supernatural. But also during this time many materialists and liberal theologians dismissed miracles as unhistorical and unscientific. Lewis's defense of miracles was important in his day and for ours.
